The Faculty of Health and Allied Health Sciences provides education in aged care, caregiver, and psychology. The aged care and care giver certificates and diplomas are conducted with the accreditation of Tertiary & Vocational Education Commission (TVEC) together with Colombo South Campus (CSC), which is equivalent to NVQ Level 3 & 4. This gives an opportunity for those who seeks foreign employment as Aged Care & Care Giver which is well in demand in most of the Western Countries & Locally. The programs, both psychology & aged care / care giver, consists of following coverage in the competency levels.

Aged Care & Care Giver

  • To produce a care giver with a sound theoretical knowledge as well as practical aspect of Aging in order to meet care needs of elderly people. This course includes a practical work placement with working allowance.
  • Introduction to Aging and the elderly.
  • Understanding the decline and being a carer.
  • Assist Living.
  • Support psychological and emotional wellbeing.
  • Understanding Caregiver stress and burnout.
  • Common Illnesses Affecting the Elderly and First Aid.
  • Understanding and identifying elder abuse.
  • Working with Positive Mind.
  • Confronting with difficult situations.
  • Understanding Local and International Job Market for caregivers.

Psychology & Counselling.

  • The Psychology & Counselling Program is designed to produce qualified and competent Psychologists & Counsellors for Sri Lanka, in order to meet the current requirements of the country in terms of psychological wellbeing and provision of counselling services.
  • This course will prepare participants to work as capable counselling practitioners in public and private sectors and with family client populations. Participants will study theoretical models, ethical aspects, and special issues relevant to their work as counsellors. Students will be provided with group training, supervision and counselling skills related to specific therapeutic approaches in psychological counselling & health care.
  • An expert panel of professionals consisting of Psychiatric, Educationalist, Psychologists, and Nurses contribute as resource persons.
  • A broad base of knowledge and skills in counselling and related psychological principles that will enable the participants develop a successful career as a counsellor.
  • Practicing as a counsellor requires knowledge in theoretical approaches, skills in counseling and a thorough knowledge of ethical principles involved in counseling practice. Thus, upon successful completion of the programme the participants will be equipped:
  • To provide the knowledge in psychology & and counseling theories.
  • To create a strong sense of different models and core skills in psychology & counselling.
  • To deliver good understanding regarding ethics and legal consideration
  • To provide essential knowledge on personality disorders and mental disorders and explain how this knowledge important in the field of counselling.
  • Impart a thorough understanding of the advanced skills in psychology & counselling
  • Inculcate ethical practices & issues relevant to professional psychology & counselling.
  • Impart broad base of knowledge of different counselling approaches & techniques relevant for the independent practice as a counsellor.
  • A critical understanding of the body of knowledge and research related to counselling and psychological principles.
  • An ability to review and evaluate the appropriateness and potential value of different approaches, models and techniques for an effective counselling relationship.
  • Pragmatic guidelines in dealing with ethical issues, boundary issues and referral systems in relation to counselling.
